The Basics of Video Editing

Skill One: Get a video recording device and a computer with video editing software

Just about everyone has a video recording device - a smart phone or a camcorder - and a computer. Even if you don't personally own both, chances are good that someone you know does.

Most smart phones have sophisticated and high quality video cameras built in. Many people own high definition camcorders. Either one will do.

Computers are of course ubiquitous - they're everywhere! Unless you are very poor (if so, I hope you can find a government agency who will help you obtain one cheaply) you should be able to come up with one. Not knowing the specifics of more than a few devices, I am going to count on you to figure out how to use yours.

There are lots of video editing programs out there, some of them free. I currently use CyberLink PowerDirector and Camtasia Studio. PowerDirector has a lot of features for a reasonable price and works well for general movie production. Camtasia Studio is powerful software that can create high-quality educational videos. These programs combined cost a few hundred dollars, which is not too expensive as far as video editing software goes. You can find much more expensive and powerful software. You can also get free software if you're in dire straights. I'll leave it up to you to find video editing software to fit your budget.
