Skill Three: Transfer the raw footage from the video recording device to your computer

The raw footage you shot with your video recording device - a smart phone, camcorder, or something else - needs to be transferred to your computer. I wish I could give you detailed advice here but there is too much variety from device to device. In my case, both my camcorder and smart phone connect to my computer via a USB cable. It's a fairly simple process of just plugging them in and pushing a button or dragging the files from one window to another. Many devices have memory disks that can be removed and inserted into a slot on a computer, effecting the transfer. Some devices may use Wi-Fi to do the transfer. Yet others may use cellular networks to transfer the files. Find out how your device works and get it done.

Regardless of the process you use to transfer your files, transfer them to a folder on your computer that can be accessed by your video editing software. If you are using found video, photos, music, or other multi-media files, put them on your computer where you can find them. You need to know where these files are located to continue with the next step - importing the files into the video editing software.
