Quadras ao Gosto Popular (B 28, B 28 a, B 28 ab, R 28)

This is a setting of a text by Fernando Pessoa. There are three different versions of this piece: one for baritone and guitar, one for soprano and guitar, and a version for three voices and guitar. There is also an alternative guitar part for the soprano/guitar version.

The version for three voices and guitar contains a separate guitar part at the end of the PDF, in addition to the full score. This makes it easier for the guitar player, having only three pages to manage while performing, instead of the lengthier full score. If you have a suitably-sized music stand, there will be no page turns!

In an email to me, Ernst Mahle's wife, Cidinha, wrote that the version for baritone and guitar is the original version, which is the one she likes the best.

All of these versions are available below. The music was engraved by Mahle himself and is available for free download. The alternative guitar part was apparently handwritten by Mahle himself. This part is almost identical to the guitar part for the version for three voices.

When I first played through on guitar the separate alternative guitar part, I initially thought it was a solo guitar piece by Mahle. I was so excited that I wrote him an email, expressing that I thought it was a great addition to the solo guitar repertory! Thankfully he did not reply right away, because soon I realized that it was not a solo guitar piece at all, but an alternative guitar accompaniment. How embarassed I was! I wrote Mahle an email apologizing for my error. I am relating all of this because I think that the guitar part alone is very fun to play. How much more enjoyable it must be to accompany one or more singers! If you are a guitarist, I hope you will seek out a singer (or make it three!) and try the piece for yourself! (Of course, if you are a singer, you must simply find a guitarist and enjoy one of Mahle's most appealing works for voice and guitar.)
